"Paul" 11 x 14 Oil on Canvas
This is a portrait of a good friend of mine who is currently pursuing his Computer Animation degree at Ringling College. His strong work ethic and passion for his artistic field is an attribute that I look up to and try to mirror in my own work and efforts. I am glad I had the opportunity to depict him.

40 x 30 Oils on Canvas SOLD
I painted this piece a few months ago but never got around to photographing it till now. This piece was a play with paint for me using a limited palette, broad brushstrokes, and a much larger use of the palette knife in the fabric. Learned a great deal from struggling with this one.

I was recently given the "Salmagundi Club Award" for my painting "Michelle" that was exhibited at the American Artist's Professional League's 81st Grand National Exhibition earlier this month.
Friends tell me that it was a great show and I look forward to entering again next year.

I'm getting set to start a new series of paintings soon and am excited to share the variety of subjects I'm diving into. Check back soon to see some of my process work.

Process

I thought I'd take the time to show my progress through a sketch and talk about how I went about it. To start things off I toned the canvas with a mix of ultramarine blue and burnt sienna. I then quickly sketched the proportions of the figure with ultramarine and began blocking in the basic shapes, values, and colors I saw before me. The most important thing for me at this stage is getting the right values in the correct spots. Generally I am most interested in finding the mid values in the portrait. In later stages I can add the darker darks and lighter lights.

At this point I am starting to add darker and lighter values after having established a mid value. Throughout this stage I am still correcting little details of my drawing that I see need fixing and getting prepared for the final strokes and details.

To get to this finished sketch I used my smaller brush to add darks to the eyes, nose, and mouth. I used a much bigger brush on the background, shoulder, and hair to keep it simple and interesting. Throughout the whole sketch I try to keep the values as simple as possible while still conveying the subject. I tend to think that the simpler values in the right spots are far stronger than an overworked surface.

These small sketches are a nice break from my larger time consuming paintings. As soon as they're done I'll be sure to post them.

Sketchbook

I noticed I hadn't posted any of my sketchbook pages and so I figured I'd take the time to scan them in and put them up. I've been attending the "Portrait Night" held at Ringling every Saturday night and am enjoying it quite a bit. It's quite a nice break from working on my large paintings and keeps me focused on the basics of drawing and value.

I recently exhibited and attended a Venice Art Center showing. I had a great time and met a great deal of nice artists. Congrats to Bill Farnsworth and Hodges Solieau for getting their well deserved awards!
